Succeeding at What Matters

“I used to be afraid of failing at something that really mattered to me, but now I'm more afraid of succeeding at things that don't matter.”

Bob Goff anyone? If you haven't heard of him, I'll fill you in: he's one of the coolest guys ever. I've seen him speak a few times and each time was better than the last.
His personality is larger than life and his attitude is infectious. If I could quote his whole book I would, but we've got work to do!

Above is a quote that I've been reflecting on over the past couple days. It's been a reminder to myself to 1. not be afraid to fail, and 2. to be mindful about how I spend my time.

I obviously have some things in my life that matter to me that I strive to succeed in (for example, design), but I also want to succeed at the things that Bob says "matter." Things like being a good friend, a good listener, an encourager, and a hard worker. I think too, by striving to succeed at these things that "matter," we also may tend to become better coworkers to one another, and all-around better humans as well.

Happy succeeding, everyone :)

Run While You Can

If you’re anything like me, you may sometimes need motivation to exercise. A lot of times, the way I motivate myself when I’m feeling sluggish and don’t want to go to the gym, is to scroll through my “Fitspo” board that I have on my Pinterest. It’s filled with images of fit people doing exercises I love, and lots of motivational quotes(as cheesy as it is, it really works to get my heiny to the gym after a long day).

Anyways! Came across this beaut post the other day pertaining to running and in a moment I was like..huh...yeah I guess that’s a good enough reason to go for a run...Because I can and there might be a day where I’m not able to and wish I was.

Expanding that into your wonderful Wednesday….extend that compliment, because you can. Let go of that grudge, because you can. Work hard today, because you can. And maybe later after work go for a run, because you can.

Skin In The Game

"The best way to complain is to make things." - James Murphy

I saw this quote in Tim Ferriss' 'Five Bullet Friday' email this morning and at first it didn't really resonate on my first pass reading it. After I read it again, it made way more sense in a personal way and I immediately made a connection to a recurring frustration on social media.

One of the more common Facebook comments I encountered while manning our social media channels is some form of the following: "Of all the things you could invent, *this* is what you came up with?" To which I would respond something like, "We're continuing our work on solving world hunger on the evenings and weekends, but now you've piqued my interest and I'm really interested to hear about your invention? (insert wide eyes emoji here)"

*Note: humor mixed with sincerity and a dash of sarcastic irony is my sweet spot.*

What I took from this quote, as it relates to this example, is that if you haven't put in the sweat equity, the hard work, the countless hours, then you have no foundation to stand on when you question someone who HAS. That's not to say that guests shouldn't offer feedback or constructive criticism - that's always appreciated - but if you don't have any skin in the game, the criticism probably won't be well received by someone who actually does.

The answer is to make things, create, push yourself, get outside the box, do things at which you'll fail, stretch yourself...building that credibility is the best way to relate and question and constructively criticize. But having skin in the game also probably means that you understand the peaks and valleys of creativity and creation infinitely better than you would have otherwise (which, in turn, means you're probably far less likely to criticize someone actually doing it).
