Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is national breast cancer awareness month! Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the U.S. will get breast cancer. However, most women will survive if found early enough to be treated. Which is why it’s very important for women to schedule a screening with their doctor. There are plenty of walks all over that help support and raise awareness. I think it’s great when people come together for a cause and I definitely suggest everyone to take part of one of the walks if you’ve haven’t done one yet.

Developing Persistence

The following exercises for building mental strength capability of consistency were adapted from a list provided by psychologist Jonathan Haidt at the University of Virginia:

  • Finish a project ahead of time.
  • Notice your thoughts about stopping a task, and make a conscious effort to dismiss them. Focus on the task at hand.
  • Begin using a time management aid of some sort (a palm pilot, a daily planner, etc.). Find a system that works and actually use it.
  • Set a goal and create a plan for sticking to it.
  • When you wake up in the morning, make a list of things that you want to get done that day that could be put off until the next day. Make sure to get them done that day.

 

Persistence and Consistency are hand and hand, the difference is that persistence is continuing on.

To Nap Or Not To Nap?

Pros:

Naps can restore alertness

- Naps can enhance performance

- Mistakes and accidents are reduced when people nap

- Naps can relax you

- Naps can give you more energy

 

Cons:

- Naps can lead to grogginess  when you wake from a deep stage of sleep.  For people who take longer naps, they can become more disoriented for longer periods.

- Napping for too long can make it harder to sleep at night

- When you nap late in the day, it could make it harder to fall and stay asleep at night

I vote... take naps! (: Short naps.
